TestIstanbul 2018 Recap

Hi all, this year TestIstanbul 2018 Conference program comprised of 3 keynotes, 2 panels, and event partner sessions. The keynotes were Erik Van Veenendaal, TMMi Foundation Keynote: Testing Centre of ExcellenceMark Winteringham, Software Testing Clinic Keynote: Liberation Not Replication: Automate to Support Testing, and Joel Oliveira, PSTQB Keynote: Mobile Testing (Field Testing Experience). The panel topics were How To achieve High-Quality Software; Static And Dynamic Code Analysis and Future Of Testing.

The TestIstanbul 2018 conference started with Turkish Testing Board President Koray Yitmen‘s talk. The topic of the talk was really interesting Artificial Intelligence vs Human Mind: Who will be the winner in software testing? He explained AI-assisted testing usage areas, its future, and its support for our daily testing activities. We believe that AI will not replace the humans but it will help us in test data creation, test scenario optimisation and creation, risk mitigation, defect clustering, smarter automation, and so on.

After, Koray Yitmen’s Opening Speech, Erik Van Veenendaal, talked on TMMi Foundation Keynote: Testing Centre of Excellence. He started with Agile and “No More Testers” misperception. He really emphasized very well that Testers will be alive in Agile. He told that especially if you are developing critical systems, you need to go to the field learn the realities in the field and create your testing plans, strategies, scenarios also based on that important observations. That’s why they sent their testers to hospitals when they were working at Philips Medical even they were in a release period. He also explained the TMMi levels, the importance of Test Policy, Strategy, Plans, Leadership, and also monitoring the results. Here are the moments of Erick’s talk.

Then, the TestIstanbul 2018 continued with the first-panel session which is about How To Achieve High-Quality Software; Static And Dynamic Code Analysis. The panelists shared their thoughts about the importance of Static and Dynamic Testing, Code Analysis, Peer reviews, Code reviews, and so on.

Then, it was time to have a lunch. TestIstanbul is one of the best conferences in the world on this topic. The lunch for me was so delicious. Thanks to Turkish Testing Board for great hotel choice and high-quality cuisine.

After the lunch, we were ready for the second keynote which was Liberation Not Replication: Automate to Support Testing by Mark Winteringham. The main point of this talk was automation helps and supports us in our testing, it should not replicate us. Mark also explained the AiT (Automation in Testing) which is created by Richard Bradshaw and Mark Winteringham. It is a mindset and namespace that promotes human-centric automation within the context of testing. (Great Definition). It also focuses on the strategy, creation, usage, and education of valuable automation that truly supports our testing activities. Before and after the talk of Mark, I met and talked with him. It was a pleasure for me to talk with Mark in real. :)

Then, the second panel started and the topic was very promoting, Future of Testing! Actually, most of the time was shared for AI and ML. Some expectations of the panelist were for me not so realistic in near future but it is nice to think out of the box and hear all thoughts on AI and automation. As testers, we are waiting for the AI-assisted tools and their usage areas. I also wonder an open-source AI-assisted test automation tool. Maybe, some people will create a new Selenium-AI project under the Mighty Selenium Project. :)

And final keynote time. Joel Oliveira, shared his mobile field testing experience in the UK. It was a really nice talk and we learned a lot about Portugal, UK, and pleasures & difficulties of mobile field testing. In one of his projects, Joel got a call at midnight and immediately went to London and for two weeks he did mobile field testing. He grabbed his backpack, put 8 mobile phones in it, and went to London. He also knew many fast-food restaurants. :) He walked a lot, tested mobile app with several networks (WiFi, 3G, LTE, etc.), and perform several real-life scenarios in the field. After this field testing process, they released their mobile app to the market and yes! They started to get positive feedback from the customers.  His talks showed us that we should not only test our mobile apps in lab environments. We as professional testers should test apps in the field, we can also use crowdsourcing testing, real user testing to support our professional mobile testing. Also, device and operating system variety is also an important aspect of mobile testing.

And after Joel’s talk, conference finished.

There were also some partner sessions at the conference. These were:

  • Emre Balkanlı, Quality from User Perspective
  • Göktürk Erdoğan, Behind The Scenes: Test Automation In Payment Systems
  • Berk Dülger, Continuous Testing
  • Serdar Aytaç, Advanced Test Automation Tips & Tricks

and our photos from the conference. :)
